Speech Language Therapy at PASS
What is a Speech Language Pathologist: Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are professionals trained to screen, assess, identify, and treat a wide range of delays and disorders related to speech, and social communication. In addition to assessing and treating eating, drinking and swallowing disorders.

Who am I?
I've worked as a SLP for nearly 4 years in Vancouver, and I've been with PASS for 3 years. My work is very diverse; I provide services to adults with brain and spinal cord injuries, young adults with neuro-developmental disorders and paediatrics with speech sound disorders. I completed my Masters degree in Edinburgh Scotland, where I lived for several years. I now live in Richmond with my husband, and my very adorable cat named Ducky.
My method: As a SLP, I operate using a Total Communication approach which essentially means that no form of communication is more valid than any other. Different forms of communication can include gestures, words, symbols/pictures, vocalisations, facial expressions, body language and using communication aids (iPads, communication boards, yes/no cards, etc.). My main objective as an SLP is always to increase independence, participation and engagement. I strive to give each individual as much autonomy as possible by providing frequent choices within my sessions. Why is SLP important: Communication is not only a human right, but also the key to unlocking self-autonomy, personal expression and the joy of social interaction.
What do my sessions look like? The SLP sessions at PASS are called "Social Groups" and aim to connect program members with one another in meaningful and authentic ways. In our social groups, we target verbal expression, comprehension, literacy and social communication skills through a number of different ways. In the last year, we have started a PASS Pen Pal program where members can write to each other between the locations. We also do a Science week once a month, a reading club and are starting an email photo share group. All communication methods are supported in Social Groups so that each program member can participate as much as possible.
